Aranyani, the luxury Indian handbag brand

Aranyani, the luxury Indian handbag brand, is continuing to focus on giving to their communities that consist of talented artisans. Aranyani’s mission of supporting and sustaining the communities it touches has grown since the company started three years ago.

Haresh Mirpuri, Aranyani’s Founder and Creative Director, will be providing rent free accommodations for the artisans and their families, to planting an orchard and gardens which allow them to grow organic food, Aranyani ensures their team is supported and sustained. This support extends to their children who received educational grants from The Aranyani Educational and Vocational Trust. The trust, formed earlier this year, began by sponsoring the education of three children this year. They plan on funding the educations of 15 more students in 2021. 1% of the proceeds from all Aranyani sales is contributed to the trust.

The company has even maintained its entire staff throughout the pandemic. During the lockdown, with the atelier closed, all staff continued to receive their pay as well as training and developmental skills in computer technology and English. Each team member also received medical insurance for their families and extended family.

Studio 189 is founded actress Rosario Dawson and fashion executive Abrima Erwiah (as seen above). The mission of Studio 189 mission is to develop talent, empower and reducing poverty through fashion. The concept is to build a fairer fashion by creating artisan-produced collections in Ghana and West Africa. I suggest if you want to purchase clothing handcrafted by women in small communities in Africa then go to the website to purchase items such as kimonos, button-front shirts, high-waisted pants and a-line skirts.

Get To Know: Parme Marin, a balance between architectural and elegance

Jewelry designer Parme Marin and her name-sake line has been getting a lot of buzz lately as an up-and-coming designer to watch. In 2013, she was selected as Vogue's New Talent. Parme also uses her brand to support and empower female artisans she's worked with overseas. The Parme Marin brand has one-of-a-kind pieces that highlights the technical intricacies brought out by several talented female artisans. Her pieces has an air of versatilely that allows them to worn throughout the season, they're constructed with materials sourced from Moroccan and few other places in Africa. The jewelry is very bold with geometric shapes, and mix of colors and patterns combined with their use of raw and recycled materials, including bone, leather and feathers.

Starting any fashion business is a huge risk it's even more of a risk when your brand is about finding and embracing talented designers in Africa. Samuel Mensah knows this all too well. Samuel was the director of an international investment fund and decided to leave that all behind to start, Kisua, a South Africa based e-commerce platform that sells clothes and collaborates with other designers across Africa. Samuel realized that there was untapped talent in South Africa that the mainstream was ignoring. He put all of his money into this platform giving a breath of fresh air to designers and artisans that may not had the exposure. Now Kisua has garner quite the attention from celebs such as Estelle, Chelsea Leyland and Beyonce.

Who: Richard Seco Spring 2015 Collection

Where: 7 World Trade Center, NYC

Overall: When I arrived at 7 World Trade Center for the Richard Seco show there was a video of a group of women in Mexico doing all hand weaving designs with seed beads. It’s a humanizing experience watching the diligence and precision that these women do on a daily basis just for us to wear an embellishment on our clothes. As the show began and the models came out in perforated leather in the form of a dress or jumpsuit however there were seed bead embellishments either on a necklace, to a guitar or on a New Balance sneaker. Richard wanted us to be aware that even though we love to watch these clothes on the runway, it's important to know that designing is a craft that takes time and skills. Also, these women in the Wixárika community doing the hand beading need to have some recognition as well. Here’s what designer Richard Seco had to say about his “Dreams” collection,

“My collection DREAMS is a collaboration with the Wixárika, an indigenous community from Mexico, who are known for their beading. As they create each beaded piece they put their dreams into their work. With these pieces and the World Trade Center venue I made a collection for future dreams and the next generation that will live and work here. This collection and its venue are standing for the generation of future dreamers to come." - Ricardo Seco

Etsy has been on people's fingertips for a long time. Consumer are now adoring the many handmade unique items that's on the website. Etsy held a large holiday preview showcasing the oh so many the merchandise that will be available come the Holiday season. There were countless stocking stuffers that you won't get a traditional mega retailer that it makes shopping fun.
