Inspected Trend: Wordplay

Slogans, phases, quotes and all of the sorts of wording were plastered on a few looks during this Fashion Month. Designer Tom Ford dive into this trend by playing up the Jay Z's song Tom Ford, with sequin dresses with "61" which is the birth year of the designer. It was slight comical with the word Molly crossed out. If you need a refresher course listen to the song here. Wording on a garment is usually associated with the junior market but it's crossing over for the older consumer. Other than that wordplay is fun and in all good fashion.

Inspected Trend: All Caged Up

London Fashion Week just wrapped up and I have to say, I was really impressed by the collections from many of the designers that showed there. London Fashion week has come a long way and to see the progress this season was amazing.
Anyway, one of the trends I spotted during that week was a fabric manipulation that turned out to look very webby on the skin such as the Julien MacDonald's sexy floor length skin tight dress or it suited up as very caged-like blazer and dress as Tom Ford runway look. Marios Schwab went the casual route and implemented the trend in a see-through pants.

It's the start of the award season and the Golden Globe Awards kicked off last night. It was all about the ladies from the female hosts of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to Jodie Foster delivering a very comical and yet an emotional speech. But before all of that commenced, the red carpet had some glamorous gown for sure.

The looks at Met Ball this season really didn't tickle my fancy especially coming from the celebrities that attended. The 2 major exceptions have to Solange Knowles in Rachel Roy and actress Carey Mulligan in Prada. But other that I wasn't too impressed. However I did perk up a bit for the classic pairing of model and designer that arrived on the red carpet. It was great to see three of my favorite models on the arms of my favorite designers.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford

There were many moments at the Oscars red carpet that definitely made me chuckle; Ryan Seacrest drenched in Kim Jong Il's ashes, Angelina Jolie right leg and Diddy's lint roller assistant. Besides the laughs, I was waiting for someone to blow me away in a gorgeous look and Gwyneth Paltrow was an absolute vision in a minimal white dress and cape by Tom Ford Fall '12 Collection. FYI: Tom Ford recently showed his Fall '12 collection in London privately for editors and buyers which means this is the first glimpse at his collection until we see it fully in the next couple of months.

News broke this morning during the Balenciaga runway show benches started to crumble under the fashion's Elite, which ultimately everyone in attendance had to stand. I did snicker on the inside, but hey no one got hurt so that's a good thing. Shortly after tweets started to fill up my timeline about the benching-catastrophe, Meenal Minstry, a Fashion Writer for Style.com tweeted, "Best quote of the day "Tom Ford could have used some faulty benches to get his standing ovation." Ouch! Which brings me to my point of this post, apparently Tom Ford was expecting a standing ovation at the end of his fashion show that never happened. Was the collection that awful the fashion crowd was unimpressed to not stand for the man that overhauled Gucci a few years ago? Well Virginie Mouzat certainly thinks so. She wrote, "From the first model on the runway, we are struck by what resembles an out-of-style Gucci collection from ten years ago." You can read the rest of the article on The Cut and it's not pleasant. Moving on to Lady Gaga's main man, Nicola Formichetti for Mugler, this show also didn't receive a pleasant review from the fashion press. Christina Brinkley tweeted this and wrote on her WSJ Blog, "It was a melange of the trends of the past 15 years: Beige from 2010, articulated shoulders from 2009, gothic, asymmetrical cuts from Helmut Lang." Another Ouch! Paris Fashion Week is not over yet and I hope that the collections gets better because the fashion critics are not holding back.

Seeing Tom Ford's Womenswear 2011 collection in motion is way better than seeing pictures. Waiting to see some form of a runway presentation for months, make this video very satisfying and well worth the wait. That Tom Ford is a smart man, he knows what it takes to entice his fans in the fashion industry and more importantly his customers. Oh, by the way I am living for Beyonce in this video around the 2:00 mark.
