Uggs, then and now!

4:02 PM

It was the year 2009 and some boots that were tan with sheepskins interior were all the rage. While some people loved them, others thought they were unfashionable and ugly. I'm taking about Uggs.

I remember back in '09/10 the Cut Blog, had a few articles about Uggs. Amy Odell wrote in this post that uggs were "bulky brown monstrosities". The Cut Blog didn't stop there, another article written by another writer, was about consumers who were in line to buy Uggs.
Our distaste for the shoes aside (okay, maybe not really aside — they’re not pretty shoes, people), we must know: What about them compels anyone to stand in line in the freezing cold? Are they on sale for 85 percent off? Somebody please explain this to us because we really can’t wrap our heads around it.
You can read the full article, here.

That article slightly triggered me because yes the writer showed her disdain for that particular footwear but it also was evident that she was looking down on those who wore them. Fashion as a whole exist outside of what we praise on the runway in New York and Europe. There are states in the US and other countries that spend a lot of money on a particular item that is not for trend but for utilization. That as well trickles down to what we call "street wear" *cough crocs cough*! More importantly, fashion is a business and Uggs has been successful for close to ten years and that speak volumes! Now fast forward 2017,  female rapper Cardi B declared these Winter frigid temps, Uggs season, she's all the way right! It has been so cold lately Ugg boots that will guarantee warmth and comfortability.

However, it was until Y/Project Fall '18 menswear runway show that revolutionized those same bulk brown monstrosities into a fashion forward moment. The creative directive for Y/Project, Glenn Marten, told Vogue.com,
“Putting on Uggs is like putting your foot in a warm pot of butter, and I thought why not elevate that and immerse your full legs! So we decided to design an Ugg boot that climbs up to the crotch and covers the whole leg.”

There you have it, from disdain to delight.
