Jenna Lyons Gives Career Advice in Glamour's September Issue

Back to school is creeping up and some of you are brushing up on your resume for that next job, this is good time to get some career perspective. Jenna Lyons, the Creative Director at J.Crew gave some inspiring words about career, success and failures. Jenna is one of the most stylish and very compose ladies in a high rank fashion position, but she is humble by her early beginnings.

See what she had to say in Glamour's September Issue.

Lyons on what she learned from her assistant days…
Jenna Lyons: “The thing I think is most important for young people to know is that today there’s this idea of having everything quickly, that you’re going to walk in the door, be a designer, and not have to do any of the grunt work. It’s just not realistic. The things you don’t learn in school are the skills you probably need more: what it’s like to work with other people, how you build a team and collaborate.”

Lyons on what accomplishments make her the proudest…
“Sometimes it’s the small stuff. I remember this woman wrote me a letter and said she had to give a speech and was incredibly nervous. She had gone into J.Crew and got something to wear, and people said, ‘You look great!’ She said, ‘I’m a scientist, I’ve never had anybody compliment me on my clothing before.’…I do think sometimes people assume that what you wear isn’t important, but I know it can make someone who needs a little boost feel beautiful.”

Lyons on how to move up in a company...
"The person who makes herself indispensable, that's the person you want to promote. But when someone comes in and starts asking—it's such a disease. Demanding, "I've done all this and I want X," doesn't work for me so much. [Instead] ask questions: "I'm ready to take it to the next step. What is it that I can do better?" That, to me, is an engaged, collaborative way to get somebody to the next level. You're not going to get there just because you think you're ready or because someone else got promoted. We don't sit here and create a scale where we carefully ratchet everyone up evenly. Because if that were the case, we'd all be drones. No one is a drone.... You are you."

Designer Chris Benz with Lauren Sherman, the Editor at Large of Fashionista.com

This past Tuesday I had the pleasure of attending a live conversation with Fashionista x Chris Benz. Chris Benz in 2014 joined Bill Blass as Creative Director shortly after shuttering his namesake label. He sat down with Lauren Sherman and talked about his upbringing, the transitioning as fashion designer and becoming the Creative Director at Bill Blass.

Below is a few notes highlighting this discussion....

Chris's Upbringings:

He grew up in Seattle and loved fashion and magazines as a young child. He would dressed his mother growing up. At 16 years old he nervously approached Donna Karan at her a staged fashion show in Seattle. Donna's number one tip to him was to go Parson in NYC.

How was Parson as a school:

Parson was a hard curriculum that under the Tim Gunn rigorous regime.

Parson was more about creating a collection versus merchandising and the business side.

Working in the industry:

Chris received a CFDA scholarship in his junior year. He also work at J. Crew, where he learned that he valued working for other people, the planning and the selling of clothes. He learn what clothes meant for the everyday people.

His decision to launch his own label:

At the age of 25 he wanted to it right than instead of later on in his life.

His decision to shutter his own label:
Chris's decision to stop producing his namesake label, because the girl and industry changed. Having a colorful collection really didn't fit in when the trend is all about the black/sporty collection such as a Alexander Wang or Rick Owens.

Advice to designers:
Don't do it without the money! Don't think the selling the clothes is the core of money coming in. It may take two or mores seasons to make a profit.

After shuttering the Chris Benz label:

He took a year off and moved to Brooklyn, took up yoga, and was approached by Bill Blass to take the Creative Director position.

How is Chris going to make the Bill Blass speak to the modern woman of today:

Taking the Bill Blass's philosophy of the modern the woman, smart dressing, colorful and comfort; It's about the 'piece'. Each product needs to be important on its own and give the woman a fabulous product all the time. Shoppers don't care about seasons, they want clothes for their own occasions. It's about communicating and having a dialogue with the customer. It's about building a collection for a few years, instead of a season.

I'm not one to jump into the spotlight all the time but I really enjoyed being the MC and talking to the audience about fashion and trends appropriate for workplace.

I found this delightful gem of a blog this morning from Rachel Wilkerson. She used to be an accessories assistant at Elle magazine and from a bit a research back in 2008. The magazine industry has drastically changed since then but it's great to read her insight as a former employee at a high fashion magazine. Even though I know what goes on at a fashion magazine through my internships, it's rear to come across it on the internet.

I guess a second time is a charm. The first time I interviewed at Teen Vogue was the same time (in the same week) I interviewed for my first internship. That day I actually had two interviews with both of the assistants, tip: Always carry more than two copies of your resume. I had to sadly decline the internship because it conflicted with the class schedule. A full year later saw a posting on Ed2010 that Teen Vogue was looking for fashion interns and I quickly emailed in my resume. I got interviewed on Monday and started my Teen Vogue internship that Wednesday.

While I was there I was surrounded by fabulously dressed editors and I had a great boss. I’ll miss Teen Vogue but this isn’t a farewell to my internship but also a farewell to my status as an undergraduate student. Now that I graduated it’s a farewell to an old me and now I’m ready to embrace the workforce with all the teachings, mistakes and journeys that I’ve been through as a student.

Yeah the internship I mentioned before was at Self magazine. As I look back at 2008 I really didn't have time to mySELF because I was always knee deep in a fashion closet somewhere. I loved all of my internships that I've done and I hope to do a few more before I graduate this year. However Self magazine is located at 4 Times Square (Conde Nast for those who don't know) that means there were always a possibility of bumping into an editor that I admire. But the best part of having an internship at 4TS is the... cafe. Since I been there I have seen Hamish Bowles waiting on the sushi line, Emily Weiss figuring out what to eat for breakfast, had a reunion with Suze Yalof Schwartz (love her!!!) and seeing the Teen Vogue staff enjoying lunch together.

The staff I worked with at Self were amazing!!! I will miss them very much.

Yes I have been really quiet these past few months as my blog slightly suffered (ok really suffered). I have been interning at Harper's Bazaar in the accessories department and my last day was yesterday. I was really sad to leave but excited to know what's ahead for me in the future. I am extremely grateful to the editors, assistants and other interns I worked with. It was truly a fun and eye-opening experience.

A little fun tidbit to share: As a huge Marc Jacobs fan I was alway excited to go to get samples at the Marc Jacobs showroom in Soho. My first time there I saw Venetia Scott and my last time on my last day I saw Marc Jacobs. I almost died. Such a great spotting to end my internship.
