Chic Inspector: style

The weather has dropped recently and everyone is taking out their sweaters and knits to keep warm. However, I love seeing the fashion set during this past Fashion Month wearing sweatshirts differently. Usually a sweatshirt is used at the gym or for a lazy Sunday, but according to the ladies above it can be worn very stylishly.

My favorite way of wearing a sweatshirt is with a full skirt a la Jane Keltner as above. I love a boxy top with a feminine bottom.

I have to say, I love to strut my stuff in front of the camera! I did so with the Kmart's Fashion Remix Challenge hosted by stylist, George Kotsiopoulos. The event was held at the Tribeca Skyline Studios on a warm spring day, it was perfect day to get into the spirit of styling a Kmart Spring fashion item. The item that was part of the challenge was a Jaclyn Smith Utility Shirt. The Challenge was to style this shirt and make it our own. I paired my printed utility shirt with my own favorite leather jacket and Kmart's Love Your Style, Love Your Size Hi-Low Skirt. I decided to be a more edgy with my outfit... I kind of knew everyone else was going to do the traditional bright-spring look. It was always good sometimes to take the road less traveled *wink wink*.

In all, it was great to see everyone's personal style come through basing it around this utility shirt. Last but not least, George was amazing during the event, he was very hands on with advice and styling tips with everyone that participated in the challenge.

The big news today was the earthquake that rattled many people especially in the NYC area. When I began to feel the tremors in my apartment I ran out of the building as a safety precaution. Unfortunately, I ran out of the building in some hot pink velour shorts and a grey knit top... hideous, I know. I just got home and wanted to relax inside for the rest of the day and wasn't expecting the ground to move under my feet. This got me thinking, wouldn't it be perfect to always looks tres chic in an event of an emergency? Below is my ideal Earthquake-saftey ensemble, peep the Isabel Marant sneakers, the essential for dashing out of the house or apartment.

This question became a recent discussion based on an article about NBA player, Gilbert Arenas ranting on twitter about what his Blind Date wore. Please read the article with his tweets, it's rude, hilarious and embarassing all in one.

Yes, I would be upset if the guy I was on a date with tweeted that my shirt reminded him of Simba or better yet the Queen of Zamunda (ROTL). But as a female I wouldn't wear or encourage my friend to wear any wild print anything on a blind date, just keep it simple. In a perfect world you like to placed the attention on who you are not who made your shirt when meeting that blind date.

There are endless outfit possibilities so I will leave you with some tips:
1.) Avoid any trendy looks i.e. color-blocking, boho chic, tribal. These looks might be appreciated by your girlfriends or your favorite gay male friend but to the average straight guy (or Gilbert Arenas) it will probably be distracting.
2.) Stick with basics, basic colors, basic silhouettes, basic details. The "Queen of Zamunda" shirt that Gilbert's date had on was a zebra print with an embellished neckline of beads and shells, le sigh.
3.) Use accessories as your statement. A really great bag, shoes, and even earrings can spark up an outfit without being so brash.

It's another birthday to be recognize and is it's one of my favorite stylish duo, Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen. However this post shines the spotlight on Ashley. I saw this pic of her recently and a lightbulb automatically went off in my mind, transitioning a suit into a more casual look. Ashley paired her pink suit with a breton stripe tee, flat sandals and rolled up the cuffs of her pants... smart as heck. Some of us have been conditioned that wearing suits are heavily applied to the corporate workplace as the required look and what to wear for an interview. Well I say, forget all of that! If you do have a suit casual-it-up or embrace the Spring/Summer season and buy a pant suit that's a pop of color.

Hopefully after tomorrow the Royal Wedding madness will simmer down a little bit. I'm not the one of those, "I'm sick about hearing about the Royal Wedding." I'm actually excited that I get the chance to witness a Prince and soon to be Princess wed at Buckingham Palace. My parents when they lived in Jamaica watched the Princess Diana wedding and told me of all the festivites that involved with the event. Here's what I was and still am sick of hearing, all the designer rumors of who going to be designing the wedding dress. Every designer under the sun at one point was in the press of being the possible designer for Kate's dress. As soon a name was announced it got shutdown as being untrue.
Another thing I'm annoyed at is the many fashion people or self-proclaimed Royal Wedding Experts talking about what designer Kate SHOULD wear.

Give me a break?!

I like fashion because I can express myself through clothes and break the rules which makes fashion fun. However some people are really going overboard with their dictations on someone's wedding attire. I'm not trying to put Kate Middleton in the mold of Princess Diana; different woman, different style.

I'm embracing this historical moment with an open mind and clean slate. This is a modern couple hopefully going do to things their own way.
