- Why fashion bloggers are more like designers than critics by FinalFashion.ca"As individuals inextricable from their medium, fashion bloggers share much more in common with designers than most fashion writers. Designers and bloggers both tend to work under their own name, and often use their own image as muse. They both tend to be intensely visual, and rarely articulate with words. Some of the tropes of fashion blogging – like the mood board – are literally imitative of how designers work – assembling pictures rather than words to build a visual diagram of what they represent. The outfit post, the street style shot echo the visual standard of designer’s output – croquis, runway exit."

"The wonderful part about The Limited and Eloquii is that they're really open to feedback and they want to know what the plus size woman thinks of what they're doing so far. They're going around the country asking women who are plus size, "how do you feel about this?" They keep going back and reworking making sure it's something that we want and if it's filling a void and that they're still on trend with what their providing for their straight size customers."

"Fashion blogging in general has been a challenging road. It’s almost like high school, where it’s filled with cliques and if you are not up to a certain par, you can’t get into that circle. In that sense, it goes hand in hand with working with brands or getting featured in a magazines."

On the other extreme are bloggers with an inflated sense of worth. In February, Macala Wright, a digital marketing consultant in Los Angeles, said she invited several bloggers to appear on a panel at Magic, a fashion trade show in Las Vegas. She had a modest travel allowance from the sponsor, but one blogger represented by an agency “wanted a first-class flight, hotel, five grand a day for three days — and an extra day to recover from the flight,” she said. Ms. Wright went with someone else and is still shocked by the sense of entitlement. “Just because you have 15,000 followers on Twitter,” she said, “doesn’t equate to Anne Hathaway showing up.”

"When it comes to brands collaborating with fashion bloggers, the lack of multiculturalism isn’t the only diversity deficiency; there’s a shortage of variety in regards to the bloggers they choose to partner with. Brands continue to collaborate with many of the same bloggers, which results in several campaigns simultaneously featuring the same bloggers, sometimes diluting the quality of the project. Personally, I don’t feel that these collaborations accurately represent the real world (and maybe they aren’t meant to), and sometimes question if brands are even interested in combating this lack of diversity. Instead of simply partnering for popularity, why not choose fresh faces? New perspectives? Different styles? Minorities?"
